The first part of the unique semi-detached church at Dale Abbey was built around 1150. In the 14th century the nearby Abbey extended the building westwards for its infirmary, and inserted a gallery in the church which became the infirmary chapel. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the chapel became the village church and the infirmary a farm house. For some long time, certainly at the end of the 19th Century, the house was also a pub. At that time, when this was the case the then Rector decided that it was undesirable for people to be able to walk directly from the bar into church, and had the connecting door bricked up! Its site can still be seen. The interior follows the 17th Century design to enable the congregation to be active participants in services Box pews also remain.
Visitors are welcome to join the regular Sunday service at 3.00pm. The church is also used for weddings, baptisms and funerals as required.
