Community Safety Update

Are you staying safe online?

We've all been spending more time indoors, so it's only natural to be spending more time on our phones, laptops and tablets.

Our Community Safety Team worked with the police to create our free Digital MOT service to help protect you from all aspects of online fraud and cybercrime. It takes just 5 minutes to complete and you'll receive tailored advice and information.

Free help to get online

If you want help using the internet and technology, there is free help available for Derbyshire residents:-

Is your Parish/Town Council Cyber Secure?

Cyber security is an important issue for all organisations, especially when they hold sensitive personal data on staff, donors, volunteers or service users.

To support this, we have produced a cyber security toolkit to help voluntary organisations in Derbyshire assess areas of weakness in relation to cyber security and signpost you to detailed advice from reliable sources. You can find out more at www.saferderbyshire.gov.uk/toolkit

If you would like advice for your Parish/Town Council, contact the Cyber Protect Officer at Derbyshire Constabulary email: Cyber@Derbyshire.Police.UK

Keep Alert - Be Fraud Aware

Since March 2020, there has been an increase in fraud, with fraudsters using different coronavirus related scams, which can leave people vulnerable to computer viruses and malicious software, as well as out of pocket.

Derbyshire Police Fraud Team have put together a leaflet to highlight some of the frauds being encountered in Derbyshire, at the moment.

The leaflet is being made available to the public at vaccination centres across Derbyshire, to try and reach vulnerable people, who don't have access to the internet.

We'd appreciate your help with promoting the leaflet and making people aware of scams, enabling them to protect themselves.

Report cybercrime or fraud and scams to Action Fraud tel: 0300 123 2040.

Suspicious, or phishing emails, should be forwarded to the National Cyber Security Centre's Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) email report@phishing.gov.uk

Derby and Derbyshire Modern Slavery Partnership

Partnership is key to the fight against modern slavery. By working in partnership, we can assemble a range of skills, resources and commitments which are required to push back at this horrendous crime, where people are seen as a commodity and not as a human being.

In response to the modern slavery act 2015, the Derby and Derbyshire Modern Slavery Partnership was formed. The vision of the partnership is to protect the public by identifying and safeguarding potential victims of modern slavery and human trafficking and target those who commit this crime. Partnership work is rooted in having a visible impact on people's lives and making a difference for them and their long-term outcomes

For more information, please visit the Derby and Derbyshire Modern Slavery Partnership Annual Report which is available here.

Venue Hire – Prevent Duty

Derbyshire County Council Community Safety Unit have been working with the district and borough councils to consider venue hire and statutory requirements under the Prevent Duty (Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015). If you hire out any venues, you need to consider the requirement that 'no public venue or network is used by 'radicalising influencers'.

If your district or borough council hasn't yet been in touch, they should be soon.

Domestic Abuse Services

We know that there has been an increase in domestic abuse during the last year, the 'stay at home' message that has helped to keep us safe from Covid19 means that some people have been isolating with the person that abuses them, and families have been increasingly stressed during lockdown. Derbyshire County Council has worked in partnership to ensure that people do not have to deal with domestic abuse alone. The services we commission are still available, including safe refuge accommodation, outreach support in the community and support for children affected by domestic abuse.

If someone needs to flee a situation to keep themselves or their family safe this is one reason they can leave home.

So if someone feels they need to leave home because of domestic abuse, or if they need to talk things through; to get advice for themselves, or for a friend or relative, contact the Derbyshire Domestic Abuse Helpline on 08000 198 668 . You can also text if it is difficult to talk on 07534 617252, email derbyshiredahelpline@theelmfoundation.org.uk or there is an anonymous live chat function on https://www.theelmfoundation.org.uk/

In an emergency always ring 999 and the police will respond.

For more information about domestic abuse visit the Safer Derbyshire Website www.saferderbyshire.gov.uk/domesticabuse
